I would prefere "entrance"

Genevieve, vloženo 13:59:23  20. 04. 2012

Mivka: I am bit confused... So the new version: The Great Fire of Prague in 1541...
For "brána" my translator has -gate, door, entrance, portal, gateaway... so I am not sure what is the best version...

Meridion: of course, will be my pleasure :-)

Meridion, vloženo 06:34:37  20. 04. 2012

I am not good enough to sugest anything about English name, but I would enjoy if I can read this thesis after finishing (in Czech).

Klair, vloženo 23:36:26  19. 04. 2012

Great, this is a perfect place to consult my English perex.... I shall come back when it is written in Czech

Mivka, vloženo 23:00:54  19. 04. 2012

Every word in the title has to be with capital, except of prepositions (in this case the two ofs and one to) and articles (only the an).

+ I am a bit idiotic tonight, so I can't really come up with anything ideal, but I would either change the entry or use it in some different structure - as means of entry, point of entry, since this suggests a bit less academic register than you want to go for.

Genevieve, vloženo 22:46:23  19. 04. 2012

I have to translate name of my bachelor work (project?). Is this ok? :-)
This is original: Velký požár Prahy v roce 1541 jako brána vstupu renesance do Prahy.

And this is my translation: The great fire of Prague as an entry of Renaissance to Prague.

When I was working at bikram yoga studio, we had problems with an amount of hair in sewerage in womens showers. So we asked our teacher Christian to create an English notice for our clients. He was originally New Yorker but with British sense of humor:
"As much as we love having you in our yoga classes, to avoid another Prague floods, please, shave at home."

verlit, vloženo 21:18:47  07. 03. 2012

Brilliant! How can anyone not love England is beyond me :-;

Mivka, vloženo 18:42:56  07. 03. 2012

Just to add to the previous debate - I found this on the London Walks blog and it seemed very cute (and very English):

verlit, vloženo 20:19:56  05. 03. 2012

Ours not-so-good one was a young actor, a bit too full of himself. He tried to make it "one man show", that sort of "see, how witty and cool I am".
We find him neither, so we left the tour in the middle, wondered to the vegetable market under the bridge instead, bought fresh cucumber and had a chat with second hand books seller, who had his stand close by. It turned out he had a book that Jim was trying to find for about thirty years and the guy was so excited and happy about it that he gave Jim the book for free.
That´s London for verlitky :-))))

Ï have tried them out on my first trip to London with my mother and we have both enjoyed them a lot - I still remember the changing of the guards with their sarcastic remarks about "if you stand on the pavement, the only thing you get to see is the umbrella of the person in front of you, so if you want to see anything, be prepared to do some wall climbing" - and then they really made the whole crowd including the old ladies with umbrellas climb the wall between the park and the road :) But we saw everything.
And this year, with Charles, we did about six of them and again, all of the guides were just extremely nice and all of them interesting.

The personality clash was my case too - the lady was kind of priggy, dull, very condescending (the kind of "oh I-will-ar-ti-cu-la-te-ve-ry-clear-ly for you, people from the other side of the Iron Curtain") and had some strange problem with granting me discount on a student card and was extremely busy, so she actually cut the tour short which kind of annoyed me, since I have waited to see St. Paul's for a year.

:-))) I am so glad you like them, since I really really love them. Same as you I have ever had just one not so great experience at it was mostly due to "personality clash" - I did not like the tourguide.
All the other guides, however, were extremely verlitish and I felt like these walks were designed specifically for me and Jim :-))))

I know Verlit knows London Walks (and I am eternally grateful to her for introducing them to me via Taverna :)), but I am not really sure if this was ever here. It's so cute, co Londonwalksy and soo cute (and really, if you ever go to London and have only very limited time, do the tours with them, they are GREAT, I've been through about a dozen of the guides and only had one not so great experience).

London Walks is old fashioned - NTTAWWT

What We Do:

We wait for you at a designated tube stop
We take you on a walking tour in exchange for £8 (or £6 concession)
Er… that’s it

What We Don’t Do:

• We don’t answer your call after two rings with an automated message that says your call is important to us (but not actually important enough to answer)
• We don’t explain that your call may be recorded for training/security purposes
• We don’t ask you to pick one of a list of 9 options
• We don’t say that your call is in a queue
• We don’t say “bear with me” while we prepare to "enter your details in the system"
• In fact we don’t say “bear with me.” Ever
• We don’t ask for your postcode/zip code
• We don’t ask for the number of the house in which you live
• We don’t ask if the billing address is the same as your home address
• We don’t put you on hold if it isn’t
• We don’t play Vivaldi while you’re on hold
• We don’t play The Cuckoo Waltz while you’re on hold
• We don’t play Enya while you’re on hold
• We just don’t put you on hold
• And so it follows that we never say “Thanks for holding”
• We don’t explain that there’s a booking fee
• We don’t explain that’s there’s a handling fee for the booking fee
• We don’t explain that the handling fee is subject to a processing surcharge
• We don’t ask for your credit card details. That’s the big, long number across the front
• We don’t ask what kind of credit card you have
• We don’t, at this late juncture, then say: “I’m sorry we don’t take Diners Club”
• We don’t ask you for the security code on your credit card. That’s the three digit number above the strip on the back where your signature is. Found it? No, the back of the card… found it? Good. No, we don’t ask you for that.
• We don’t ask for your telephone number just in case the booking goes wrong or the walk has to be cancelled
• We don’t ask for your email address to confirm the booking
• We don’t ask you to please hold while your card goes through… please bear with me… should only be a second… system’s slow today… bear with me… right, that’s going through now… no, hang on… sorry about this… come on, come on… oh. Oh dear. That hasn’t happened before. Can you hold, please?
• We don’t then cut you off while you’re holding

To recap:
