	Toomz: yes! I like and very often practise this kind of games on my own ('cos I hate these cheap wrong translations)... Sometimes the English sentence is literally calling out of it, but in this case I'll have to guess. So... my bet is: "I thought it wasn't real."

LOTR was my first english book too. It was quite hard for me, but luckily I remembered czech version. It took me about nine months to finish it. Now I read Terry Goodkind´s Sword of the Truth. But in czech:) I´m afraid I would be lost in story without knowing what it is about. I have a same problem as some of you. It seems the more I watch movies in english, play games in english and speak english(in work), the less I am able to speak in czech. I ´m stuck somwhere between. I don´t understand everything in english. Sometimes I need to watch clips five, six times till I completely understand what is going on. To watch movies without czech subtitles is very difficult for me, although I understand almost every word. And as I´m trying to speak in czech, I often cannot find the right words, but I know the right words in english. So I use dictionary to translate english word to czech. And I feel a little bit...stupid about it:) (Sorry for mistakes in my text. Hope you understand it anyway:)

	That's reminding me how I read 'Alice in Wonderland' in English. Amazing play with the language it is - but pure hell when trying to translte some passages. Strangely thought I understood the meaning and the "weird stuff" quite well.

	I´m so sorry, but nowadays I read books only in Dutch and I think, that for next three years won´t be any exception :o)) But I have some bookworms in my library :o)

	Meridion: Yes, normally I also don't have much problems I think, but Lipwig is based on playing with words, double meanings and all that stuff and I'm still not used to english well enough :)

	Vever: I have also problems with my first discworld novel and the jokes in it, but after I get used to Pratchett's languages I started to like them more and discovered several jokes which could not be translated.

Mivka, Dara: Ok, your warns are accepted :o) Next time I am in library, I'll look back at some of his books. It souds quite interesting for me. Vever: Exactly that what I think about Discworld novels.. I can't catch majority of jokes. Thats something I like on the Czech version - to relish every sentence :o) Somebody said that Jan Kantůrek doesn't only translate, but, after reading text, he wrote it in Czech.. by his own way. I agree. I try say that I like his translations :o)

Mivka: LOTR was my first (well, the second, but the first does not count) book in English. It was marvelous, although I have to read it sometimes not only with a dictionary but with a Czech translation as well, to understand the meaning of the sentence. And it was also infuriating to look for a unknown word in a dictionary and in the end to find out that the meaning is the same as four other words before (shimmer - glimmer - glitter... I already forgot the other two :-))) On the other hand it helped me to understand what a linguistic masterpiece LOTR is.

I read LOTR too and I think, that translation is really good. I like most of the poems more in czech. But those parts which are written in old english...we just don't have the right kind of czech to translate it perfectly. I read few Discworld novels, they are quite easy I think, but the latests about Lipwig...I don't have any problem to follow the main plot, but I feel, that I'm missing most of the jokes there :) Than I have some english books in computer... I don't care much if the book I'm reading is in czech or english.

Mivka: oh, i don't think they translated it. I never seen it in czech. I also have Abhorsen serie (i would like also the short stories...how is it called... something about Wall?) and three from the "Clock" serie - Monday, tuesday and wednesday and impatiently waiiting for Thursday. Mellor: ech, i don't thik i can tell you this. It is part of the mail plot. But there are robots/cyborgs and "Lords", who fight against each other and for their robots they need "flash" from chlidren.

Dara- What's the book's name in Czech? I like Nix, I have the whole Abhorsen series and two another books I quite liked and this sounds well. Mellor- well my experience is, that Nix's style of writing is kind of queer and it's usually brat-based fantasy (main character is usually a teenager or a kid of some kind) and in some places it is written as one (so as if it was meant for teens and kids). You might like it, but don't expect much of it.

I have red some Discworld novels (ok, Science of Discworld/Globe), one novel by Garth Nix - Shade's chlidren. Quite good, by the way (and it reminds me to buy another book from him. In english). And Thne Gunseller by Hugh Laurie. Most dificult for me was Nix, caouse "new" vocabulary he uses in this book. It is posapocaliptic world inhabitet only by chlidren. And they use diffrent names for common things/activities

toomz: Huh, never heard about that. What is it about? :o) Meridion: I know very well what do you mean.. sometimes I forget well-known word in czech and I help myself with English! Not only when i write something.. but even during talk. (I thought it's from reading English, playing English games, speaking English with friends.. oh, my poor native language) Mivka: How brave you are! LOTR in English.. few years ago I tried read The Fellowship. I seized up on third page. Then I saw The Silmarilion :o) and my intent to read Tolkien in English expired :o)) So, as you see, I didn't read it, so I can't judge the translation. I will trust you :o)

Currently I'm reading LOTR in English. It's a long-run battle, but it's incredibly different from the Czech translation. Tolkien was a master of his language indeed and frankly- the old English is a language of kings and knights while Czech language is much less noble, it's simply peasant language so though the translator did a great work its isn't the same and it can't be the same. When you read the English version of book, you simply feel Tolkien writing. The Czech one is only a translation.

	I am generally reading more books in English than in Czech. To be more precise, I almost stopped reading Czech books. Then I realized I have sometimes problems to find the right Czech word. Not in the every-day conversation but during writing my stories.
