taková blbá otázka - jak byste přeložili spojení Wasted Minds? já tu nad tím přemýšlím a zatím by se mi nejvíc asi líbilo wasted jako zbytečné a u minds jsem si řekl, že by nejlíp seděla duše, takže by to byly Zbytečné duše, ale nakonec mě napadlo, že lepší by bylo Zbytečné existence.

váš názor?

toomz: Let´s be positive ;o)

Marcus m, vloženo 18:59:28  04. 11. 2007

toomz: of course i got the meaning, but i could not resist to point out just another case where czengelish misuse of words like actuall, eventuall took better of one of us. ;-)

toomz, vloženo 18:56:47  04. 11. 2007

Oh Marcus you know what I ment, don't you? :) (I knew word "actual" is not correct but I hoped you would not come ;-)

Marcus m, vloženo 18:53:09  04. 11. 2007

toomz: actual? really? ;-) i would prefer to say current case, Kulinsky trial or something along these lines ;-)

toomz, vloženo 18:46:12  04. 11. 2007

Well, to be frank first thing which came up to my mind was actual cause with Kulínský and Bambini di Praga... I am sorry, but that is my thinking (anyhow it is cruel and ironic).
But thanx for the post :)

Thanks. To my disapointment, "Elvis has left the building!" does not mean anything more than "Elvis is not in the building any more" :-)))
I hoped for something... sophisticated

Kroc, vloženo 13:01:20  03. 06. 2007

an interesting ;o)

The whole article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_has_left_the_building

Kroc, vloženo 12:59:23  03. 06. 2007

Iwo: sorry, I don´t know, but it seems like a interesting phrase...I´m trying to look it up...I found something on Wikipedia: "Elvis has left the building!" is a phrase that was often used by public address announcers following Elvis Presley concerts to disperse audiences who lingered in hopes of an Elvis encore. Al Dvorin, a concert announcer who traveled with Elvis throughout the performer's career, made the phrase famous when his voice was captured on many recordings of Elvis' performances.

Does anybody know what american phrase "Elvis has left the building" mean? I've heared it so many times, but I never caught the meaning...

Bellatrix, vloženo 08:32:12  17. 05. 2007

Great :o))

Meridion, vloženo 19:27:37  16. 05. 2007

Very nice :-)))))
However, I think we could find some examples of craziness in Czech too.

Aditu, vloženo 17:24:57  16. 05. 2007

I found this text right now :) I love such play on words and thinking about the laguage and its illogicality :)

Let's face it, English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't- fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend?
If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick" You lovers of the English language might enjoy this.
