2001 May 15: "Fellowship: BOOK II - Chapter 5"
The Bridge Of Khazad-Dum
Augh! I'm just starting to get into Gandalf, and he's killed off! And yes, I feel badly now for badmouthing him earlier on. I bet you Tolkienites were smugly sitting back and saying to yourselves, "Ah, she'll feel so guilty later when she finds out how he gave his life to save his comrades so they can complete their mission.
Pretty creepy scene when they find the fragments of that journal chronicling the last days of Balin and his companions, and then start hearing the drums themselves.
Good to see Frodo finding more courage. Also good to see the loyalty/bravery of Aragorn and Boromir as they leap to help Gandalf even though he tells them to go ahead.
Isn't there a filk song about a Balrog? I've always wondered where that reference came from.
Great chapter. And as much as I've mocked Gandalf in earlier reports, I have to confess true dismay when the Balrog pulled him into the abyss. Can't believe I'm actually starting to care about the characters in this book. How did this happen?? |
